At the base of the font lies the foundation stone of the building, laid by the
Bishop of Lincoln, the Rt. Reverend Kenneth Riches, in July 1962. Plans for a
parish church were initiated in 1959. In 1961, the designs of Sam Scorer were
approved and received interest on a national scale. Father John Hodgkinson,
vicar at the time, had seen some of the architect’s earlier work. Claiming that the parish had ‘precious little money but plenty of determination,’ he approached Sam Scorer, who was then working for Denis Clarke Hall, Scorer
and Bright, with the commission for the church.
