The Parochial Church Council was given the opportunity to express any particular
views or opinions they had on the design of the new church. The church that was
built in 1963 cost £22,960, an incredibly small amount even then. The money was raised through a
variety of sources.
The Parish received £18,000 in grants towards the cost of the building, but the rest was raised by
the efforts of the parishioners, and by donations. The parish ‘Appeals Committee’ organized various fundraising events including dances, coffee mornings, a ‘mile of pennies,’ and also a ‘buy a brick’ scheme.
The parish also contributed to the donations and, where possible, helped with
the construction of the building. The pews, for example, although designed
largely by Scorer, were cut, made and fixed by local parishioners, and are made
of Paranha Pine. The work was undertaken by Simons Construction, a local firm, and the church was
consecrated on 6th October 1963.
