Scorer was greatly influenced by these ideas. He believed that the whole
congregation should be gathered around the sanctuary and have a clear view of
everything that happened there. To accomplish this at St John’s, the pews form semicircles around the front of the sanctuary, and the floor
slopes down from the entrance to the font. The arrangement of the church
results in clear sight lines for all, reinforcing the centrality of the
sanctuary area.
