This is carried into the church and leads the gospel procession. During Lent and Advent a wooden cross is carried in its place. It was designed by the sculptor Charles Edward Sansbury, along with the
candlesticks on the metal rail and the alter, they were incorporated into the
original design of the church. Sansbury was the art teacher at the
local teacher training College (now
Bishop Grosseteste College) between 1960 and 1964.
