The roof reaches a height of
28 feet. It is based around a
three-inch thick reinforced
concrete shell, supported on
two low points to the north and the south. These low points are connected by a
tie beam. The concrete shell of the roof is covered with insulation board and
super-purity aluminium.
Where it meets the ground, the roof is plunged into two pools of water.
Again, this reflects the significance of baptism in the design of the church.
The upward curve of the roof seems almost to be reaching for the heavens.
The roof has in its lifetime suffered severe storm damage. Essential repairs
were finally carried out in 1999-2000.
