The design of the glass is built around a series of hexagonal shapes which echo
the shape of the church in plan. This tying together of the art and
architecture was an important aim of the artist and architect, Sam Scorer, the
two working closely together.
The window was designed and made to a strict budget. Whereas stained glass cost
around £15 per square foot when the church was built in 1963, the east window was made
for something under £5 per square foot. This was achieved by making use of rich coloured glass panels
which needed no additional painting or firing. The glass, inserted in 2 foot by
3 foot panels, came from a variety of sources in Belgium, Germany and across
England.
